The good and the bad in dental implants

What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery ?

Oral Surgery is surgery of the oral cavity, for example the removal of wisdom teeth, removal of cysts, mucosal conditions, infections, insertions of dental implants.

Maxillofacial Surgery is surgery for the entire facial skeleton including jaws, nose, eye sockets, etc. It deals with:

  • Fractures, tumours, malformations
  • Malfunctioning/malpositioning of the jaws – corrective surgery
  • Malfunctioning of the jaw joint (ATM)
  • Bony reconstruction to enable the insertion of dental implants
  • Aesthetic surgery (nose and eyes, skin fillers for wrinkles, scar improvements etc)

Being part of Maxillofacial Surgery but not executed in private practice is surgery for cleft lip and palate, large malignant tumours, face lift.
